| | | | Mr.pickle.
| | | In the cases of people like rachman! and DK I would say you are correct. However when oliver had golds on the first 5 levels I think that is still worth alot, considering those are the most played levels, even back when he was playing they had been played by several thousand people. |

| | | yah pick, but before you got here, i took all of those golds from oliver, and then i took level 6 too.

| Mr.pickle.
| | | You got me there. |

| | | It comes down to how much time you put into the game (multiplied by some skill factor), with the new players having an advantage because the tricks are open.
Based on the graphs and info on our profiles, it looks like I played actively from early 2006 to early 2008. But I played before and after that range, so you could say I played for 3 years.
The group of iPhone players seem to be new to the game (IMO), due to the slow forum activity and slow levelpack releases, but actually they have been here since mid-2008. Tyler has been playing for about 2 years.
Tyler is ranked in the HoF somewhere between me and MF, and since all three of us put in a similar effort (at least on the same order of magnitude), I'd guess his skill factor is also somewhere between mine and MF's.
So I conclude that this theoretical battle of the generations wouldn't be so intriguing as you suggest. Some of the old players and some of the new players would both be in the top 5 if all things were equal. The people who could keep playing the longest would win, so that would put Rachman!, Oliver, and PrayeR at a disadvantage to the current generation and my generation. (Rachman!, Oliver, and PrayeR were only around for about a year each. Oliver has 263 games online; I have over 5,000.)
But this battle of the generations will never happen because any old player who comes back to see the new bike, new features, or changed online community just might not be interested in the game anymore, or might stay absent for the reasons they left, or just be bored of the game / HoF.
To that comparison of skill level among generations, I'll also add that HoF champions as far back as DavidKing still have golds, so you can't say the current generation beat us too much. The previous champions (PrayeR and earlier) spent too little time playing when the game was too new to bother perfecting a level, but IMO their skill and potential are just as good as ours. (On the other hand, it almost seems unfair to give them legendary status and never let Tyler earn it.)
Also, you might argue that the "pioneers" of the game were good pioneers but are not suited to the challenges of the game today. I disagree. The game is all about pioneering (as I realized too late). For almost every one of MF's secret Golds, he has found a slight improvement in the route. He didn't waste time squeezing every frame out of the route because he didn't need to. And that is always the real trick to the game.
Of course I've forgotten how to play well, but that can be expected.
BTW, this isn't a good time for me to return anyway because it is my last semester of college. |

| | | Oh Kris. typical of you. I have some things to say about it.
"some of the new players would both be in the top 5 if all things were equal."
huh? what does that even mean? what is "if all things were equal"? all things are as they are.
"The previous champions (PrayeR and earlier) spent too little time playing when the game was too new to bother perfecting a level, but IMO their skill and potential are just as good as ours."
hogwash. you can't just assume this. my point was that they were playing at a time where their 'skill' and accomplishments were viewed as amazing, but was it really and your comments about Tyler prove that perfectly. In fact, all you have to do is find a current player that has extremely similar accomplishemnts to Rachman. Betchya anything nobody's ever heard of them. interesting, eh? you can't peg it on the fact that tricks and routes are open now so they have an advantage over the pioneers. that only holds so much weight.
"(On the other hand, it almost seems unfair to give them legendary status and never let Tyler earn it.)"
um. exactly. you could 'guess' all day that they could have been as good as Tyler, but you could do that with anything, in any competition, in any sport. don't rob the status from the best to prop up the status of has beens. Fact: they didn't stick around long enough to continue to prove that they could compete in today's game. Fact: Tyler annihilated anything they ever did and is better than any of them. period.
"Rachman!, Oliver, and PrayeR were only around for about a year each. Oliver has 263 games online; I have over 5,000"
so, using this logic, if a new person submits a few games, then we can assume if they kept going that they would be as good as mike flips if they just put in the time? I suppose so Kris, but what's your point? you could say that about anything. it's seems like a silly and argumentative viewpoint to take. it's like you are in argumentative philosophy 'college mode' or something. it also seems like a fruitless slap in the face to all the people who did put in the time to get golds and climb the ranks.
so if you take a previous olympic sprinter from decades ago who never even came close to Usian Bolt's current records, and said…
he's probably got the same skill and ability to run just as fast. if only he were to train harder, eat a better diet for energy, get a really good coach, and spend more time perfecting his abilities, then he'd surely be as quick if not quicker than Usian Bolt.
ok sure whatever. pointless.
and how do you conclude that "this theoretical battle of the generations wouldn't be so intriguing as you suggest". I say… yes it would.

| | | Your analogy of Olympic sprinters could work to compare me to Tyler, but Oliver and other old players had significant setbacks more similar to the sprinters hundreds (thousands?) of years ago.
Oliver had setbacks: there was a time when he had Golds in most of the Standard levels, and since he had the Golds, he had no reason to improve his times. He was at a disadvantage because he had no competition and because he didn't know what a good record time was. He was even playing with a different HoF scoring method.
And yet, he was able to rank almost as well as Tyler in the Standard levels, only playing the game for half as long. Not just anyone could do that. Sure, maybe a player we've never heard of could beat one of his records, but no one gets to the Top 10 for Standard levels without being good.
Oliver, PrayeR, and DavidKing (Rachman! really isn't helping my argument; he was the TTC when the game came out, and I'd guess not too many people played then) beat the many players (hundreds?) of their times, and that suggests a skill level more than, say, Xuzz or Henoch, who are ranked well.
When I say "all things equal," I mean, imagine if the old players had started at the same time we did. They were competitive and good enough to match what Tyler or I could do. I'm not arguing that MF would be beat though; he is most likely the best player we've had.

| | | well... analogies are rarely perfect, but i think you get my point.
i'm not sure i see oliver as being standard champ as a setback. that would be like looking at my 21 current golds and saying that i am at a disadvantage because nobody is beating them. i don't follow.
anyway i completely agree that specifically oliver and dk were great players. they were here, and still competing on a part time level for a good while after i started playing.
i suppose the current crop (and the ... let's call it.. 2nd gen crop) of players are just much more advanced. i think we've wrung out the levels so much now though, that we are never gonna see someone come in here and whoop up on everyone like we've seen in the past. i know there's always room for a new gold, seriously. i been here long enough to see that happen when i never thought it could. but i think the players of old were pretty good, while many of the players today have really really fine tuned exactly how to do it.
i still believe though, that we could see maybe one crazy person who has no life and lots of free time (i'm being serious) just hammer this game. would they ever catch mike? hard to say. he's way out there. certainly not golden club. i think he's got that nailed down por vida. |
| Kristopher
| | | Your record on Malysz is only as good as it is because I beat your old record. You (probably) would have stopped playing that level sooner otherwise.
Imagine if that happened on all of the levels. It did happen to Oliver, because even though there were other levelpacks, the Standard levels were respected more.
I think the former champions got to the top and became bored once they reached there. But now it takes 2-3 years to get to the top, so people stay longer. I suspect that Oliver would have stayed longer if he needed to and could still reach the top. And if he played today, he'd be just as advanced as we are. |
| Vega
| | | i already said oliver and dk were great players. i agree with that. |
| Kristopher
| | | Well, there weren't that many other good players back then. PrayeR was on their level. I suppose Rachman!, You Qi, and a couple others would be good, but not the best. IMO. |
