multiple textures

i'm posting this in "Ideas" because it is still to early to make an official announcement about the next version. and actually, this is the real player-submitted idea - i can recall someone asked about such possibility shortly after v1.0 was released

swf flash link: img/bod-multiple-textures.swf

almost everything in this level is done using the 2 well known textures, this is to show how the color transformations can create entirely new look. of course you can also use other bitmaps, eg. the brick wall.

well, i think i should call the next version 2.0 after redoing all levels this way

That looks very nice! I think it will inspire people to make more creative levels.

You know.... I hate to be negative, but I can see some potential confusion in using this feature.... looks great, but if levels are designed badly, could be a nightmare.
Will it unduly slow the game down?
Will it confuse on what is a "wall" or what is not? - I recognise this is already a grey area, with walls that aren't solid already being a possibility.

I personally really enjoy the level design, and am not so interested in something that is visually confusing, without adding to the game play...

just my 5c worth.

This being said... I'm looking hard at your test animation and it ROCKS... entirely because you have picked clour combinations that make it obvious that you are "underground" .... but then your level designs are often the best implimentation of stuff...

I think these new options are fantastic if used appropriately. However, we will need to consider this before levels get voted into the HoF. Lee brings up a good point about the gameplay slowing down. Hopefully the system can handle the new designs. The only thing I'd like to add is that if a certain level does not seem right for the Hall, then clearly it won't be chosen, so that weeds out the need to worry about a certain design messing up the competition. After everyone becomes more familiar with the new options (color, textures, bitmaps and such...) we will still be going through the same purification process for inducting future levels.

Beefing up the game and its options is fine and dandy and I would encourage Sz to continue to do so. But that is accompanied by the need to really be choosy when publishing these new levels for live competition.

This would make the game visually more appealing and maybe help us budding designers to get some ideas
No doubt confusing to play at first but that happened with other new features like updrafts, portals etc.
Looks great Sz

I think since the graphics are (mostly?) pre-rendered when the level is loaded, this won't slow the performance down.
It might seem confusing, but this would be the level creator's fault. They are still just making lines, some of which are Phantom, so it is not totally chaotic now.
Mr.pickle.
very chaotic

Don't listen to them SZ.

You have always come through on making the game just right. Let us police bad level design like we do now. Anything you can add would be great!

I think the additional texture options offer great potential for beautiful level designs with a real feeling of depth - when used selectively of course.

WOW, I'm speechless! I would love to see something like this come to life in the next version!

of course you are right - this feature can be used to create awful and confusing levels
but in fact, what it does is to give us more freedom, which can be used for good or bad purposes. and this problem with freedom is not specific to Bike or Die

PS. don't worry, it can be disabled, turning any multitextured level into the plain old two-color mode
