BOD 2 POV playback and 3d level rotation and more

I'm not sure how the 3d in version 2 is done, but it would be really cool if when paused or at the beginning of the level, you could rotate the level in 3d with the stylus, similar to 3d Mines. Another feature that would be very, very cool is a POV playback from the view of the biker going through the level in 3d

Also, any possibility of anti-aliasing the bike and/or the levels? It looks fine at a distance but up close it gets a bit pixelated.

Another Idea: Slow motion playback? could be controlled by a button that toggles slow mo.

Mr.pickle.
that stuff would be pretty cool, but I dont think that having a POV playback is possible for the moment....
slow motion playback is alright I gess

maby some of the others could be possible waching online recordings but I dont think it would be any small feat to accomplish this on a palm.

OK!

I suggested AntiAliasing (AA) some time ago, but the resons against it are as follows:
The most common and easiest to implement form of AA works by rendering an image much bigger than the screen. This is where the x2, x4, x16 etc omes from. Applying x4 SSAA to a common palm screen would result in a required image size of 1280x1280. The TX/T3/Lifedrive etc screen would need 1280x1920. This is bigger than the average computer screen. The game only manages 40fps on my palm at the moment (press F, Enter to measure FPS) so increasing the size by a factor of 16 would make it run at 2.5FPS. Then you have to downscale the image by a means of resampling, which means taking each 4x4 block and averaging the pixels for the smaller screen. I'm not sure how much time this takes, but I would guess that the performance would drop to between 2 and 2.25FPS. This is completely unplayable. You are more likely to get a top time playing with your left hand upside down while drunk.

There is a more performance happy version of AA called MultiSampling. This only renders big the edges of each shape (the textures are already AAd) which makes it much faster. The problem is, it still takes time to work out which bits of the picture are edges, and which are textures before you render it. This is a programming nightmare (I think) which is why it is left to the graphics card manufacturers and the games engine designers. (big names like Valve and Crytek not little games developers like Toyspring, Astraware etc).

Also, there is another problem. Drawing to the screen has a set of commands but drawing to "not the screen" may not. This might force a 2-dimensional array to be used, which might be slower. (I am njot an expert, and I have not consulted an expert, so don't quote me!).

It might be possible to have the edges translucent like the translucency in arcade Reality (so it is possible) and the same way web designers use PNGs because they have variable translucency to make their images antialias. The bike would especially lend it'self to this, as it is made of images.

On a positive note, the screen detail on a palm is far greater thanon a PC, because all of the pixels are crammed in more tightly. just look at how big a 320x320 image appears on your PC screen (or indeed your mac screen). This causes BoD to look smoother that non AA PC games anyway.

You are probably referring to the pixellation because of the intro movie. This is because the bike is made from small images, which are scaled up to display the close biker at the beginning. I would have used bigger images, but it is not a huge problem.

The 3D engine in Bike or Die 2 simply draws the 2D shape, and then draws the perspective lines in and fills the spaces. It would need a serious redesign to make it possible to rotate like in 3d mines, which is not worth it for a "toy" really. POV might be a bit easier but still very hard to miplement. It might look a bit weird too. It would be fun to try riding in that view though.

I DO like the slow motion idea.

NICE post PiNerd!

"This is a programming nightmare (I think) which is why it is left to the graphics card manufacturers and the games engine designers." I just remembered that the Zodiac's graphics chip has a built in AA feature (w/ no performance reduction).
@Sz: Use it!

You got a few things wrong though:

"It might be possible to have the edges translucent like the translucency in arcade Reality (so it is possible) and the same way web designers use PNGs because they have variable translucency to make their images antialias. The bike would especially lend it'self to this, as it is made of images." The bike IS made of PNGs (AFAIK)

"Also, there is another problem. Drawing to the screen has a set of commands but drawing to "not the screen" may not. This might force a 2-dimensional array to be used, which might be slower. (I am njot an expert, and I have not consulted an expert, so don't quote me!)." I did quote you, and there is actually a Palm API function: WinCreateOffscreenWindow().
Mr.pickle.
