Bike or Die v1.4 is coming!

Download the first public beta here:
  • BikeOrDie-1.4beta1.zip
  • BikeOrDie - New Deal.prc - levelpack utilising 3 new gameplay features, described below

    New in gameplay:
  • Updraft (can work as an elevator, trap, create effects like reversed gravity, weightlessness)
  • Variable friction. Certain surfaces can be marked as "slippery" or "reduced friction"
  • Selectable number of mandatory checkpoints (can increase the number of different ways a given level can be solved)

    Technical improvements:
  • Ghost bike. Race agains your best recordings! It's almost like multiplayer
  • Improved map
  • Levelpacks on card. Levelpack selector can be used to move levelpacks between internal memory and card. When installing manually, place them in /Palm/Programs/BikeOrDie/Levelpacks
  • Recordings on card. Just switch to "Card" in "Recording Options" and all your recordings will be moved to external memory freeing a lot of space in your device. (The full exaplanation of this feature and its benefits would not fit here, i will describe it later)

    Bugs/Compatibility issues resolved:
  • No more annoying pause when dying (experienced on NVFS devices like Lifedrive, Tungsten 5, Treo 650)
  • Better power management (does not run on full power when not needed, eg. in pause, map)
  • Pause automatically when the device is turned off

    Update:
This new beta version fixes all reported bugs, except for the problem with moving recordings to the card (which can now be diagnosed better thanks to the improved error messages).
Download the new beta here: BikeOrDie-1.4beta2.zip

    Additional improvements:
  • updraft looks better (or at least it does not look like rain anymore, the new look is sufficiently abstract to pass as a wind, magnet force, dragon breath, etc )
  • ghost bike is visible on dark background
  • more specific error messsages when moving recordings to the card
  • new easter egg: "ighost"

thanks to all who tested "1.4 beta 1"!

    The last(?) update:
    BikeOrDie-1.4beta3.zip

This one fixes the "invalid filename" bug (which only affects Kristopher's devices ) and allows you to select your preferred updraft style (new, old, or both!)

There's a slight slowdown with my puny little Palm IIIc
    but its ok.

Also, how do you turn off the ghost bike feature.

    Hello, everyone.
I know I'm new and (for now) far back in the field...
But let me say that something that didn't happen on the old version is happening now (in the beta version) on my LifeDrive:
It seems the button I selected for "forward" isn't disabled at the end of a game and (if it's kept pressed - which is necessary in same games) instantly gets me out of the BoD program, without saving the run on my name (it shows a blank "played by" on the "recorded games" window)!!!
    What could that be???
    Thanks, everyone!

    Kassuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuula!
very very very soon, the first Brazilian on "total race")

Tabs - In the Options tab of the menu, go to "recording" and just tell it not to automatically pick the best recording as a ghost bike

    Good luck kassula

Ghost bike will drastically change everyone's best times because we will all be able to see exactly where improvement is needed. We'll just make the adjustments and have nearly perfect runs. Prepare for medals that have been held for a long time to be bested. Also, the best times on each level will now have a much smaller gap. Replays will begin to look more like each other...almost identical... Just watch........

    Thanks mike flips.

To be honest the ghost bike is putting me off - I'm
watching the ghost bike and not the terrain.
Its an excellent feature but it'll take a bit of time
    to get used to.

...And it might be harder on grayscale, too.

Oh, I remembered what I was going to suggest!!!!!
You know how the ghost biker is all lines, instead of pictures? That would make it easy to enlarge him. And there is already a small version of the biker in the map now. So one thing that would be great, is if we could play while looking at the map. The bike is very small, but it is still playable. And then, maybe Sz could add a whole zoom feature to the game, that allows free-control zoom?

BTW, maybe the updraft could look more like small bubbles going upwards? Just another graphics suggestion.
    Sz
i have just completed what was planned for today:  New Deal is now in the levelpack explorer

live zoom: yeah, it is already on my todo list, but i decided it would be too much work for v1.4.

    updraft bubbles: worth trying (thanks!)

From looking at the first four standard levels, which everyone has played so many times, the game looks fairly realistic with the ground, sky, and pictures.
But the other levels are very unrealistic; Wheel Insider is not possible in the real world, and Clay Serpent is not intended to look realistic either.
So while the bubbles or the current updraft graphics may or may not look real, there is no reason for them to look real. If there was some way to have the updraft twirl the clouds or make them move, that might be better.

P.S. Do the demo players get to play any new levels?

Vega, it will help a bit but i think youre overestimating a bit too much lol...

If you watch videos online it is pretty much the same thing, but since here we are only currently allowed to watch our own replays i'd say that the online videos are still more useful then watching ourselves play...

Neways, i just beat all the levels, i think i have mastered a lot of them already, it took me a few hours to beat them all... its not that much of a different style a game... just now we can fly

    Nice times Kris btw

Will I need to reinstall the NewDeal pack before being able to submit to server? And if so will it wipe out my existing times?
    mike flips
    292817
no, and no Ibanez, but if you do need to reinstall a pack, if the levels are the same it will keep the times
    Ibanez
But currently BOD doesn't think the pack is part of the TimeTrial - how will it know? Isn't that a feature of the pack itself, rather than the BOD version, as it doesn't appear to connect to find out?

Mike Flips - I think it's gonna be really helpful but what I am basing that on is the game Gran Turismo for Playstation. I used the Ghost replay feature a lot on that game and it helped immensely. Perhaps this will be different though because the times are so close to each other already (like within hundredths of a second usually) that the ghost bike will be right on top of the real bike for most of the run. At any rate, it will definitely help on the longer levels (like anything over 30 seconds) more than the short ones, especially levels like Cave dweller and Die or Die. I guess we'll see what happens.....Dun Dunn Duuunnnnnnnn!!!

btw Mike Flips- pretty cool new graphic with the flipping bike and all.....how appropriate

After playing the 'ghost bike' version of BoD on my palm IIIc I've come to the conclusion that the device is too slow, even in b& w mode.It runs fine on my Palm M130 but the screen lag is horrid.

So I need to buy another Palm device - What devices do you guys use ? - what would you recommend ?

    Vega

I use a Treo 650. I've never played on anything else.

I'd probably recommend the T|X, even though I have never used one for more than a minute. But the slightly older models are so much cheaper on Ebay; you might find the Zire 72s cheaper than the Tungsten E2.

This one is probably the worst for BOD; it's half the speed of my watch and has 3.5 times the screen resolution, but look at it anyway:

-> Will I need to reinstall the NewDeal
-> pack before being able to submit to server?

I've never played any good times in the first few days, so I doubt you did either.

-> Ghost bike will drastically change everyone's best times!

It will help people get good much faster.

I have to admit I thought that when I suggested Ground Based friction etc I NEVER thought they would be implemented. You've TOTALLY out done yourself and added a WHOLE lot more that I would have thought for a .1 release.

I can't wait for the level editor I am SO jumping on this one when it's out! (I'm already playing with the beta and Sooooo want to make my own levels with these new features)

    -> A .1 release.

Programs such as Bejeweled and Medievel Heroes went almost directly from v1.0 to v2.0. And the owners of v1.0 had to pay more for v2.0!! I'm glad Bike or Die! is not like that.
