Bike or Die v1.4 is coming!

Download the first public beta here:
  • BikeOrDie-1.4beta1.zip
  • BikeOrDie - New Deal.prc - levelpack utilising 3 new gameplay features, described below

    New in gameplay:
  • Updraft (can work as an elevator, trap, create effects like reversed gravity, weightlessness)
  • Variable friction. Certain surfaces can be marked as "slippery" or "reduced friction"
  • Selectable number of mandatory checkpoints (can increase the number of different ways a given level can be solved)

    Technical improvements:
  • Ghost bike. Race agains your best recordings! It's almost like multiplayer
  • Improved map
  • Levelpacks on card. Levelpack selector can be used to move levelpacks between internal memory and card. When installing manually, place them in /Palm/Programs/BikeOrDie/Levelpacks
  • Recordings on card. Just switch to "Card" in "Recording Options" and all your recordings will be moved to external memory freeing a lot of space in your device. (The full exaplanation of this feature and its benefits would not fit here, i will describe it later)

    Bugs/Compatibility issues resolved:
  • No more annoying pause when dying (experienced on NVFS devices like Lifedrive, Tungsten 5, Treo 650)
  • Better power management (does not run on full power when not needed, eg. in pause, map)
  • Pause automatically when the device is turned off

    Update:
This new beta version fixes all reported bugs, except for the problem with moving recordings to the card (which can now be diagnosed better thanks to the improved error messages).
Download the new beta here: BikeOrDie-1.4beta2.zip

    Additional improvements:
  • updraft looks better (or at least it does not look like rain anymore, the new look is sufficiently abstract to pass as a wind, magnet force, dragon breath, etc )
  • ghost bike is visible on dark background
  • more specific error messsages when moving recordings to the card
  • new easter egg: "ighost"

thanks to all who tested "1.4 beta 1"!

    The last(?) update:
    BikeOrDie-1.4beta3.zip

This one fixes the "invalid filename" bug (which only affects Kristopher's devices ) and allows you to select your preferred updraft style (new, old, or both!)

Kristopher: I have BOD installed on internal memory. No errors moving recordings to and from card, just the anomoly that BOD lost the times for the current pack(NewDeal) and even after I brought the recordings back it didn't know of a best time for Level 1. Now when I look in the list of recordings the best time(which I had previuosly done) doesn't have the medal.

    1. micha: "disable other keys" in "control options" should solve the calendar finish problem
    2. the other bugs are not yet fixed (quitting from map and losing the current level time when switching to the card). fortunately the lost time can be recovered by using the easter egg "rescue"

I would KILL for a level editor... *cough* *hack* *hint* *cough*... damned allergies
    MacGuru
oh and thank you for the option for updraft...

    You rock!
    Micha
Thanks for the answer . "Disable other keys" is activated. The problem occurs, when pressing the calendar key a bit longer right after BOD has displayed the message "saving records". Micha

Fill + Lines! That will get their attention!!

I think you should release it now!

P.S. I'm not sure why I didn't think of this before, but in the "Rec" Menu, a "Replay Best Time" option would be great!

finally, the  New Deal online competition has started!

your recordings created with the "not hall of fame" version cannot be submitted from the application nor java websync but you can submit manually from web browser. download the official levelpack to make sure your new recordins are marked as hall of fame compatible. ("hall of fame" levelpacks have a small blue marker in the levelpack selector)
    Ibanez
Excellent - my times are up, let's see if my golds can survive the night!! )
    mike flips
sadly ibanez, i dont think you will keep one sorry
based on peoples' posts of their times
    Ibanez
    I know - I've still got hopes for Level 1 !
    Kristopher
Great! But I just tied Tabs on Konecnik Down; I need to beat him first!!
    mike flips
sorry ibanez, but i beat that, i just havent submitted yet im doing some work now

damn alex, u just squeezed by in thriller
    Kristopher
There are still bugs in the current version!

As recently stated by Micha, the "disable other buttons" is not fully working. It seems to work, but if you do any "button mashing" and press several buttons at once, it will exit the game.

Also, if you are playing a levelpack saved on the SD card, exit the game, and restart Bike or Die!, it will take you to the Standard Levels. So every time the game restarts, you must go through the levelpack selector to get back to the levelpacks on the SD card.

Something is wrong with the sound? I can only hear the wheels- no biker or audience.

Also, when moving the levels and recordings to the card, it seemed to lose my progress, and it doesn't think I have beat any levels now. Maybe the levelpack_results.pdb is misplaced?
    Sz
"disable other keys" - i will check the "button mashing" issue.

what is your levelpack filename? it should be named exacly like the levelpack itself, so eg. "BikeOrDie - New Deal.prc" and not "BikeOrDie_-_New_Deal.prc" (moving the levelpack using the BoD's levelpack selector guarantees it has the proper filename). i think this could be also the reason of losing the results file.

the sound was not changed at all in v1.4. maybe you are launching BoD from internal memory and your sound file is on card - then it wouldn't load the sound effects (solution: launch the game from card or keep the sound in memory)
    Cirenco
Treatment to change the name of the package as you say but not admits it. The problem must be that I played only the first version that I make SZ.
    Kristopher
For the sound - could *someone* else try it for a minute on the new version? Does it work for everyone else?

Filenames... I think the filenames are being changed when the levelpacks go to the card. I Hotsynced the first New Deal levelpack (unofficial version) into the Palm's internal memory. Then I used Bike or Die! to move the levelpack to the SD card. When I downloaded the Hall of Fame version of the New Deal, and put it on the SD card, it had a different file name. I may have put things back into the internal memory.

    installed in RAM:
    BikeOrDie - New Deal
    moved to card
    BikeOrDie_-_New_Deal

    installed on card
    BikeOrDie - New Deal

So the file names are changing. But shouldn't the levelpack databases change names, too? I'm not sure why this is happening.
    mike flips
I put the new sound and new version on my palm and everything is fine kris but i never played around with the card

SZ hows the recent games section link thing coming along? !
    Cirenco
I have ?BikeOrDie - New Deal? and ?BikeOrDie_-_ New Deal_Results? but now treatment to raise them and does not pass anything
    Kristopher
Maybe the sound problem is just me!
    Sz
filenames: i don't remember which beta version did that incorrectly, but the filename should be always "BikeOrDie - New Deal.prc", "BikeOrDie - New Deal_Results.pdb", and that's what the final v1.4 does. tested on treo and zodiac in "BoD-free memory" configuration (recording location: card, keep in internal: none). by moving the single card between these two devices i had the same recordings and results on both.

oh, and maybe we should now move to the new thread as v1.4 is already released
v1.4: New features, new levelpack, more fun!

recent games: yeah, i remember, but the updated level editor will come first
