| | | In reference to Mike's suggestion about the Golden Club, I brought it up to him that the GC is not a very fair comparison statistic for those who joined on in the last year or two.
Here are some reasons why:
1) A lot of GC points were earned 2-3 years ago, when there were many fewer levels to focus on.
2) Mike (and others) have perfected each level, making gold medals much harder to come by now than they were 2 yrs ago.
As an example, The Veenk is #26 in GC with 900 days. He hasn't submitted since May 2006. He earned these points BM (Before Mike).
As another example of how it is more difficult now than it used to be, I wonder how many GC points Rachman got for his underground game? He is now #34 on that level. A comment was posted with his 2005 game that if anyone beat it, they were a FREAK. Not that I like being called a freak, but I (and 32 other players) have beaten it. rachman! on Underground
The GC is good for players of yesteryear, as it keeps a presence for them on BoD, but the TTC points system and the TR time system are more accurate for active players. There are only 3 players in the Top 10 GC that are active (Mike, Kris, and Vega). Only 11 of the Top 40 GC are active.
Prayer (#7) and Oliver (#8) are in the Top 10, but don't have any golds left. The only gold that Rachman (#9) has is bottle. If you look at their profiles, they likely earned their points BM (before 2006). Holding 20 golds for one year would earn 7300 pts.
And to think, I just told Xuzz that he had too much time on his hands . Like I told Mike yesterday, I should just shut up and play... |

| | | Interesting that you would bring this up to Mike. Anyone who digs around enough in the GC forum thread will soon find that Mike and I hat some pretty lengthy discussions about the accuracy/correct representation of the GC point system. The root "issue" or "problem" is that it's time based. My argument (if you wanna call it that) back then was that it's no different than any other record keeping system in sports and/or other competitions where records are acknowledged for a certain period of time until they are broken, then a new person's name is burned into the previous person's place.
A great example: Mark Spitz has often been recognized and known as possibly the best Olympian ever for his 7 gold medals in swim competition in one summer Olympics. Now Michael Phelps has broken his record and Spitz will be stepping down. If you treated their accomplishments in the same manor, and Spitz collected 7 GC points every day for 36 years, he would have compiled approx 91,980 points by 2008. Phelps comes along and begins collecting 8 points per day in 2008. Using the same system of recognition, Spitz would still be #1 in GC until the year 2039, when Phelps would finally surpass him.
With that in mind, it hardly seems fair at all, because Phelps has more golds, better times across the board, but would be recognized as "2nd" behind Spitz for 31 years.
It's basically penalizing Phelps for being born after Spitz. So he who comes first has a significant advantage over he who comes second. Or.... he who played BoD first has a big advantage over he who plays BoD now. (as far as GC is concerned).
The GC club system is a wonderful idea for historical purposes, but it's not a very accurate measure of current rank of Gold medal ability. Laser has 23 golds in 2008. That, in my opinion would be like having 'maybe' 40 or 50 golds in 2004. The problem with my calculation is the 'maybe'. It's immeasurable. It's incalculable. This is exactly what Mike was trying to communicate to me a couple years ago. I understand now.
